Canon Power Shot SD1000 digital camera review

Canon Power Shot SD1000 digital camera review

Within the past year I purchased the Canon Power Shot SD1000. I gave up my Sony, which I loved, because it was just too big and heavy. The Canon Power Shot is compact, 2” x 4”. But the size does not take away from its power. The camera allows me to take singe shots or videos. It has a rechargeable battery (comes with charger) that has a very long life. When I asked the sales person if I should purchase a second, backup, battery since I like to take lots of pictures when I go out he said that would not be necessary. And he was right. Even though I have used this camera for long periods of time on my trips I have never had the battery quit on me.

I take a lot of pictures of animals and plants. Although the camera comes with a memory stick that does not hold much, the cost of a larger stick is not too high. This camera takes great picture up to a 12x zoom. This is great for taking great, clear, pictures from a distance without disturbing the subject. I can take picture with as high as 3072 x 2304 pixels. This is great for the long shots. I can then crop to the scene I want and still have clear pictures. And with my 1 Gb stick I can still take about 400 pictures on a stick. I have not had to purchase more sticks. At 640 x 480 pixels I could take up to almost 4,000 pictures. That is never going to happen for me, people who take close ups or portraits may find this useful. I also like the ideas that I can take postcard 1600 x 1200, and widescreen 3072 x 1728 pictures.

And now the video. The camera easily allows me to take 20 minute videos. Or I can easily shift from taking videos to still shots with a click of the thumb. This is great for me since I like to take videos and then catch that special shot for my teaching Powerpoints.

The review picture feature is very easy to use. the still, video, and review are on a slider which can be easily reached. I like to see what I have just taken so that I will know if I need to retake a picture. This feature is great because it is so easy to use.

Finally, the special features such as lighting, saturation, sizing, adjustment to situation, are easy to use. The function button is very clear and the choices are very clear. The features such as flash. environment, single shot and or multi shot of are very clear and easy to get to right next to the screen on the back of the camera. These are the most used features and are easy to get at and use. The “shot” selection allows for single, multishot, one or two second delay, or user set delay.

As a photography enthusiast I have found this camera great for my needs. And that small size lets me keep it in my pocket or purse so I can carry it wherever I go.
