Compaq Presario A916nrCOMPAQ A916nr Pentium Dual-Core Mobile Processor T2330

I bought the Compaq A916NR Dual core computer at a large national retailer.  It is one of Compaq's later models and comes standard with several options.  The options, price and screen size are what initially caught my interest.

The A916NR is a stylish looking computer.  Dark black case and black(lighter tone) keyboard and screen.  I believe it comes with a silver case as well. The 17' WXGA screen is the perfect size for mobile computing.  The large screen displays crisp images and the color is vibrant.  Even with the large screen the notebook seems to be fairly light, sturdy and easy to transport.

The A916nr sports a 1.6 GHz Pentium dual core chip set that has 2048MB of memory and supports up to 2GB of additional memory. I checked the specs before hand and it appears that this is the only chip set option available with this model.  The A916nr has a 160 GB hard drive and a DVDRW drive and 10/100 WIFI networking capability.  The large hard drive is good for computers of this cost and size. It also has USB, firewire and MicroSD card slots, perfect for connecting to all the portable memory drives or MP3 based music players.  All this is a sleekly designed box and easy to use interface.

The model I bought came preloaded with Windows Vista edition.  It also comes in Linux versions as well.

The performance is average to above average. The large hard drive makes boot up a little longer than I expected but overall it loads up and is ready for access in about 4 minutes.   It is able to handle all the windows based applications( MS office) with relative ease. I also use some more powerful modeling software for my job and the Compaq is able to handle the additional requirements without suffering any performance loss.

The on board WIFI access makes surfing the internet a fast and enjoyable experience.  I was able to setup my computer within minutes to access my wireless router.  This makes it easy to surf the internet throughout your entire home.

I am a lifelong gamer and was pleased with the system performance using todays more power and memory intensive games.  Even the internet based games performed well with the high speed access, additional power and memory.

The overall cost, features and performance make this model a steal for under $700.00.  Overall it good be a very good primary or traveling secondary computer for anyones needs.  Good prices and option do come with a few drawbacks.

Some drawback need to be pointed out. With the Vista edition its a little bit of a challenge to load third party software so keep this in mind.  Also, upon boot up I noticed my first issue with this model.  Compaq preloads their newer models with so much adware that it should be illegal.  Four different programs launched at startup.  All were unneeded and an annoyance.  I quickly eliminated these programs from  my startup menu.  Once that was done I was able to enjoy my new system.
